 Race is misnomer; there is only one human race. Color discrimination is what we refer as racism. Racism in the United States has been a major issue since its founding era. Historically, the country has been dominated by diverse settlers from Europe. Major racially structured institutions include slavery, settlement, Indians reservations, segregation, residential schools (for Native Americans), and internment camps. Racial stratification has occurred in employment, housing, education and government. Racial discrimination was largely criminalized in the mid-20th century, and it became socially unacceptable or morally repugnant as well, but major inequalities still persist and racial politics remains major phenomena. Michigan is still saddled with racism, sexism, and ignorance. All the inter race vices that all decent people struggle to avoid still persist. Racism is not a one-way street. Most of us (whites, blacks, Latinos - includes all other groups, Asians, etc,) exhibit multiple biases regardless of ethnicity. Racism is real and has become institutionalized and structural in scope. Understanding the human dimension in relation to what we know about our own microscopic existence in this universe may help most of us avoid some of our relentless ignorance we harbor in many fronts. Read about the Milky Way. The Milky Way galaxy is an island of hundreds of billions of stars, gas, and dust held together by gravity. Our human family's 0.01% difference is environmentally traceable. The 99.99% similarity is genetically through evolution or creation. Until we address racism in all it forms, our collective hopes may subside in the face of the "global village" concept.
